At 2341 hours, volunteers were called from the comfort of their beds when yet another MVC was dispatched in the 7-8 box area. Caroline Communications indicated that a motorcycle was involved. Officer 715 (JT Bartz) arrived POV to find a motorcycle and its rider down on the side of the roadway. Command was established and Paramedic 17 (Ben Wilson/P. Holland) arrived and began patient care. Within minutes, aviation was requested by command for a category B/priority 2 patient. Brush 705 (716/B. Cahall) and Engine 702 (719/R. Dixon) arrived and provided assistance to the EMS crew, scene lighting and cleaned debris from the scene. A scan of the area revealed no suitable landing area for Maryland State Police Aviation/Trooper 6, so a decision was made to send Engine 702 to set up a landing zone at Station 700.
Minutes after the departure of the engine, Communications contacted command and advised of another priorty call in the 7-5 box area. Engine 702's crew split at the station and responded to a reported cardiac arrest on Bell Street in Henderson, while Engine 703 was placed into service and established the helicopter landing zone.
Upon arrival at the Bell Street incident, it was learned that the patient was not in cardiac arrest, but rather had severe respiratory distress. The patient was transported priorty 1 to Kent General Hospital in Dover, DE by a split crew from Paramdic 16 (P. Brelia) and A-56 (Marydel). The MVC patient was airlifted to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore for treatment. The MVC is being investigated by the Maryland State Police with assistance from the Caroline County Sheriff's Department. Units worked on the two calls for nearly 90 minutes before returning to quarters.
